B-4 GAY PEOPle's ChronICLE PRIDE GUIDE 1996

'She's a dyke, a big, butch dyke, the sort we never see on TV'

Continued from page B-1

talented, and it's not because I can't do it, it has most often been because I am gay.

The head of one of the networks said to Time magazine about me, "Yeah she's talented, but what are we going to do, put her in a sitcom and cast her as a little boy?" Well, how about putting me in a sitcom and casting me as a dyke? Now there's a radical idea. So when people like The John Larroquette Show give me an opportunity and give me a recurring character, that's re-

ally exciting. I get to play an openly leseven a lesbian, she's a dyke, a big butch

bian character-not

dyke, the sort that we

never see because of lesbian chic. Then like Matlock, where

when I do something

I'm just this tough little police woman,

So at the same time all that was going on, NBC cast me as a captain in the military in a miniseries. I just strut on stage and nobody says boo about it, nobody says a word about it. And I'm the biggest, butchest bull dyke you've ever seen in your life in that uniform! I thought they were going to poof up my hair like they do with Matlock-they cut it, they made my hair shorter, they made me even butcher than I am, and nobody said a word about it!

What kind of girl gets your attention?

The femme ones... the long haired, beautiful babes. And young, young, young! I always say that if they're old enough to be in my field of vision, they're old enough for me!

that's very exciting that they can see past the queer thing and just let me work.

NBC has been very good with me around that I've done mini-series for them. At the same time that the Margarethe Cammermeyer story was being made-which is all cast with straight people, they wouldn't even let me go in to read for a part in that. There were plenty of side parts of course I wasn't going to get one of the leads, they needed stars for that, I understand. But there were many side parts in that movie that they wouldn't even let me read for, "because we don't want any actual gay people in it." It was ridiculous. It's like playing to you guys-playing to the Midwest. They say that you're not ready for it.

In addition to your comedy and your acting, you also have a career as a jazz musician, and that seems to be something really close to your heart. How's that going these days?

Oh, it's going really well. The music is working, we're working on a record deal as we speak, and that's the most I can say about it because

I don't want to jinx it. I'm getting quite a little name for myself in that arena, so I'm pretty happy about it.

I've also been seeing a lot of your writing as well.

Yeah, I've been writing a lot. I've just been hired to write the screenplay for Stone Butch Blues with my writing partner Maggie Cassella, so I'm pretty happy about that.

There's a lot of dykes out there who I'm sure want to know if you're single, and if you'll be working the girls at Pride.

Of course I'll be workin' the girls at Pride, I'm always workin' the girls everywhere! What kind of girl gets your attention? The femme ones...the long haired, beau-

tiful babes. And young, young, young! I always say that if they're old enough to be in my field of vision, they're old enough for me!

There were some girls last year at Columbus Pride who got arrested for being topless and jumping into the wading pool.

Good for them! They sound like my kind of party girls... I'll be looking for them, those troublemakers!

You know, I hear some of my friends say that they're worried about the younger generation. I'm not, I'm not worried about them at all. I think that politically speaking they're so far and ahead of my generation that I'm watching them in anticipation to find out what they're going to do for us. I think they're going to take us right into places that we've never dreamed of.

Exactly, I agree. I'm very excited about the queer youth movement. These kids are fierce. Frankly, I'm just excited by queer youth...

If you could send a Pride message to your fans, what would it be? What does Pride mean to you?

Well, actually, gay Pride is not my big day. I prefer gay humiliation, and we'll be having gay humiliation day the next day in my hotel room—bring your own whip!.

Lea Delaria will be performing at the Columbus Pride Rally “Celebrating Who We Are" on Sunday, June 30 at Bicentennial Park. Call 614-299-7764 for more information.
